How we score
The VersusAnything Score is a 0-100 rating calculated for every product from its measurable specifications, then compared side by side. It is designed to be transparent and reproducible rather than a secret opinion.
Step 1: choose the rows
Each category defines which rows are scored and in which direction. For example, battery capacity scores higher-is-better, phone weight scores lower-is-better, and main camera megapixels score with a low weight because sensor size and processing matter more than pixel count. Text rows are never scored.
Step 2: normalise within the category
Every scored value is placed on a 0-1 scale between the lowest and highest value found among all products in that category, so a score always means "relative to its peers", not an absolute judgement.
Step 3: group and weight
Rows are grouped into factors and each factor is weighted. Current Phase 1 weightings:
- AI Tools: Capabilities 50%, Value 30%, Ecosystem 20%
- Cars: Performance 20%, Economy 15%, Practicality 15%, Safety 15%, Technology 10%, Comfort 10%, Value 15%
- Laptops: Performance 25%, Display 15%, Portability 15%, Battery 15%, Ports 10%, Value 20%
- Smartphones: Performance 20%, Camera 20%, Display 15%, Battery 15%, Software 10%, Design 10%, Value 10%
Other categories currently use a single overall factor until their weightings are finalised.
Step 4: compare
On a comparison page, both scores are shown with a bar for each factor. A difference of three points or less is treated as level and the verdict is decided on fit rather than score.
What the score does not do
- It does not measure real-world performance, build quality or software polish; those appear in the editorial text.
- It does not include rows a manufacturer leaves unpublished.
- It is not a star rating and is not submitted as structured-data rating or product markup.
Weightings are reviewed when a category changes materially and the date of the last change is noted here: October 2026.
